Tired of barroom rhetoric and sweeping generalizations? Then come join the Jena Debate Society (Debattiergesellschaft Jena). We’re a university group at the University of Jena where EVERYONE can participate.

We meet every Tuesday at 6 p.m. and debate a wide variety of political, cultural, philosophical, practical, and sometimes even humorous topics using the standard formats of German college debating (OPD and BPS).

We cover everything from “Is tactical voting regrettable?” to “Should the female breast be treated as equal to the male breast?”

Here’s the interesting part: whether you’re for or against a topic is decided by lottery. The focus of the debate is then on which side constructs its arguments better and more logically.

In the process, you’ll not only hone your own rhetorical skills but also develop a broader range of perspectives and the ability to reflect. Through this, we aim to foster democratic discourse and offer you a relaxed and safe environment where you can try things out and receive constructive, friendly feedback.
